Asbestos was a common building material in New Zealand between the 1950’s and the mid 1980’s due to it being a very stable material with excellent fire-retardant properties. Its use was eventually banned when it was discovered that exposure to asbestos fibres put people at significant risk of developing asbestos-related lung disease and cancers. As the material was widely used, and its use was considered at the time as best practice, there is no central register of which buildings it was used in, nor where it is in any building.

In 2016 new regulations governing how asbestos is to be managed in the workplace came into force. See the attached link for a copy of these Regulations. (Health and Safety at Work (Asbestos) Regulations 2016)

To support these Regulations WorkSafe NZ has published two main documents:

                        1. The Code of Practice for the Removal of Asbestos: November 2016
                        2. Good Practice Guidelines for Conducting Asbestos Surveys: October 2016

In addition to this there is lots of other useful information on their website (http://www.worksafe.govt.nz/worksafe/information-guidance/guidance-by-hazard-type/asbestos)

Ladra Ltd is able to assist clients in managing their asbestos issues in a professional, responsible and pragmatic manner.
